Gerry Niewood
"Facets"
Gerry Niewood is a talented multi-instrumentalist who has appealing sounds and styles on the saxophone and flute. Niewood, best known for his association with flugelhornist Chuck Mangione, first joined his quartet in 1968, and continued through 1977 having appeared on most of his famous records. Niewood had later stints with Gil Evans, Gerry Mulligan, Dave Samuels, Joe Beck, and Simon and Garfunkel, and mostly worked in the studios and freelanced until rejoining Mangione in the mid-1990s when the flugelhornist began his comeback. Niewood recorded two albums in the late 70's as a leader for A&M Records and is back for his first brand new set in over 15 years. Facets, produced by Bill Goodwin, features guitarist Gene Bertoncini, bassist Steve Gilmore, Goodwin on drums, and son/tenor saxophonist Adam Niewood guesting on two tracks. The album, a mix of classic standards and one original track ("Dedication"), shows the various sides of this prolific and often under-rated musician.
